About TABB
TABB and its volunteers have
served the Austin area pet community since 1998. There are blood
banks in the United States where large numbers of dogs are kept
and caged in a kennel environment. With the use of dietary supplements,
these dogs can donate blood as often as every three weeks. Our
donors are community donors where participating dogs live and
play at home. They donate blood at the hospital every three to
four months, sometimes less often depending on demand. Because
we are so small, most of TABB blood and plasma stays in Austin.
All of our blood products are collected safely, in a veterinary
hospital, by a veterinarian, and without sedation. Each dog is
given a physical exam by a licensed veterinarian and blood test
prior to donation. The owner stays with their dog through the
entire process, which usually takes about 30 minutes.
When do veterinarians need
blood products?
Some common situations where
blood products may be used are traumatic blood loss (hit by car,
gunshot, and bite wounds), anemia due to flea/tick infestations,
internal parasites, kidney failure, heat stroke, snakebite, pancreatitis,
auto-immune diseases, surgical complications, and clotting disorders.
Our donor bank makes it possible for veterinarians to treat their
patients quickly and safely with community collected blood.
Products for veterinarians
TABB carries only red blood cells
(both 1.1 positive and Universal) and canine plasma. Because
we are so small and designed to support the Austin area, we do
not ship any blood products. Veterinarians call 797-4357 for
more information.
