What Makes a Good Blood Donor?
Ideal donor dogs are healthy
dogs between 1 and 8 years of age, weigh at least 60 pounds,
and are of a gentle temperament. It is important that donor dogs
are current on vaccines, maintained on heartworm preventative,
and that they are not pregnant or currently nursing puppies.
We do not collect dogs that have had blood transfusions in the
past. Greyhounds make excellent donors for a couple of reasons.
First, a large number of greyhounds are universal donors, which
means any dog can receive their blood. Second, because of their
natural disposition, they are typically easy to work with and
are more relaxed during collection. Donors come in many different
shapes and sizes but they all have one thing in common, they
remember the treat after donation.
